What Private Investigators Can and Cannot Do in Ohio

In this article: Ohio private investigators can conduct lawful surveillance, research records, and interview willing witnesses. They cannot trespass, hack accounts, impersonate police, or obtain protected records through deception.

Television makes private investigators look like they can do anything. Real investigators work within Ohio law, and that is what makes their evidence useful.

What PIs Can Do

Observe from public places, research public and lawfully available records, conduct interviews, and document findings.

What PIs Cannot Do

Trespass, impersonate law enforcement, hack phones or accounts, pretext for financial records, or record conversations illegally.

Information That Helps an Investigation

Bring full names, dates of birth if known, current and past addresses, recent photos, vehicle descriptions and plate numbers, work schedules, and the dates or times that concern you. Share any documents, court orders, or deadlines. Accurate information at the start means fewer hours spent on groundwork and a more efficient investigation.

How Investigators Stay Within the Law

Ohio investigators may observe from public places, research public and lawfully available records, and interview willing witnesses. They may not trespass, impersonate law enforcement, hack phones or accounts, obtain protected financial or medical records through deception, or record conversations illegally. Lawful methods protect you and make evidence more useful in court.

Using the Results

Findings are delivered in a clear written report with dates, times, observations, and supporting photos or video. Many clients share the report with their attorney, who decides how it fits the case. Investigators can also testify about what they observed when a matter reaches a hearing or trial.

Every case at Ohio Security & Investigations begins with a confidential conversation.
